Walmart is excited to introduce its Delivery Unlimited, which is an expansion of its popular delivery of groceries. Walmart also plans to expand its “click and collect” service by the end of this year of 2019 to 3,100 of its current 4,700 stores and offer same-day “click and collect” at a selection of 1,600 of its stores that are mostly in large metropolitan areas.
The new annual subscription for unlimited delivery is $98 for a year or $12.95 per month. That provides for no per-order fee. Customers just place an order on the company’s app or site and can select a convenient window of time for when they want that order delivered.
The company has also been offering other initiatives to entice online shoppers to do their grocery shopping with them. Its main target appears to be Amazon Prime’s annual membership plan with a fee of $119. Those Walmart perks include pickup at a number of the stores, free one-day shipping for orders of more than $35, and a helpful in-home service where employees will even place the groceries directly into the refrigerator!
It is estimated that Walmart will be spending as much as $215 million in its latest attempt and that it will keep the costs down by delivering ordered items from a fulfillment center that is close to the customers. That figure is much less than the $800 million that Amazon has been spending in order to make its one-day delivery plans come to fruition.
Walmart’s already-existing service has been offering online orders shipped to the nearest Walmart for free or directly to the home for a $9.95 fee. That service will continue to be available with a choice of “millions” of items compared to the 220,000 items covered by the new delivery subscription.
