With Twitter CEO Elon Musk, it’s a tale of two people. According to the people who know him best, he’s more like the measured and professional businessman who understands how to make deals. However, his tweets often tell a different tale. Musk has made some controversial tweets that are a bit outside his own rules. But he is savvy enough to where to draw the line.
Musk’s meeting with EU Commissioner Thierry Breton about Twitter’s management outlined a number of provisions that will have to undergo compliance if Twitter continues to operate within the EU region. Whether Musk will comply is unknown. However, Breton says there is a lot of work to be done.
While Musk has made a commitment to follow the rules, most know that what he says and what he does is often quite different. Musk insists that the company’s policies have never changed. Some beg to differ. In fact, the company’s rules regarding misinformation regarding COVID is not being enforced.
Musk seems to be talking out both sides of his mouth. Rather than focusing on banning people who push hate speech, he seems to be focusing more on reducing it. This barely meets the DSA requirements.
Regardless of Musk’s “free speech” stance, he will only be allowed to go so far. And regardless of what he says about Twitter’s policies, there really hasn’t been a change. Anyone who views his tweets can see that much.
Musk quickly deleted a tweet regarding tyranny and Apple. And it’s a good thing he did because it gave his argument no merit. Musk seems to be worried a lot more about PR than anything else. So all we can do is sit back and watch him continue to tweet controversial things. Perhaps he can convince some of his supporters to fork over $8 per month.
