If you’ve been dying to get your hands on Samsung’s new Galaxy Fold phone, you might have to wait. Samsung formally announced the Galaxy Fold in February to great excitement. They planned to release the device in late April, but that date is now being pushed back.
The Galaxy Fold promised to be a leap forward in smartphone technology. It features a screen that can go from a 7.3-inch tablet to a 4.6-inch phone. This is because of what Samsung dubbed the “Infinity Flex Display,” which allows you to fold the screen to a smaller size. Instead of glass, the Infinity Flex Display consists of a thin layer of plastic that can bend.
According to The Verge, Samsung was supposed to launch the device on April 26 at a $1,980 price point. That all changed when reviews from early testers began pouring in. Reviewers complained about a number of things. The biggest complaint was that design flaws caused the phone to become unstable after a limited amount of use. The protective film over the display seemed like something that should be removed, but when users peeled it off, the device became unusable. For other people, the screen began to bulge in the middle where it folds. For others, it wasn’t the display that failed — the phone quit working entirely for reasons unknown.
Samsung delayed its launch events in China, which prompted people to speculate that the phone itself would be delayed. Rumors began that it would ship out in May instead of April.
After much public speculation, Samsung finally issued a statement that confirms the Galaxy Fold’s delay. They acknowledged that reviewers had issues with the phone. The company further stated that they appreciated the feedback and need time to process it. They plan to do their own rigorous internal testing.
While they didn’t give a new release date for the Galaxy Fold, they did say that they would announce it “in the coming weeks.”
