Fans have been clamoring for footage of Square Enix’s “Avengers” game since the moment news broke that they were making one. Flash forward to the Monday of E3 2019 and those fans finally got a trickle of what was to come. While the giant of a gaming company saved the game’s trailer for near the end of its presentation, how the fans responded likely did not mesh well with what Square Enix thought the reaction would be. While the game will focus on the core Avengers team of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), the faces of those heroes, faces that people have become accustomed to across a decade of films, only vaguely resembles those characters. The end result? Lots of lambasting the design aesthetics on social media.
“The Avengers” is being made through a collaboration between “Crystal Dynamics” and “Eidos Montreal.” Even with a lengthy look over the game, what it actually offers seems vague. It is obvious that the game will be a third-person action title but how that title plays remains to be seen. The game’s story will be an original yarn, similarly to “Insomniac’s” handling of Spider-Man on the PS4-exclusive “Spider-Man.” One story detail that is known is that Captain America dies early in, leaving the actual story five years afterward with a superhero team that disbanded after being at fault for the large scale destruction of San Francisco.
Other details include an impending beta release on PS4, co-operative play, free DLC after the release, and a voice cast filled with industry veterans. Despite all these plusses, the visuals going with those actor’s performances are still an irritation.
While its obvious that the MCU actors’ faces were not used as a basis, that is part of the reason behind the backlash. Other complaints include the fact that Captain America’s armor resembles a riot officers and Thor wearing a shirt that features a headlight. Some were also curious where Hawkeye was, as the character was a no-show in the presentation.
Regardless of whether The Avengers founders or finds its feet, it is not the only imminent game to feature Marvel’s characters. Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 is primed to hit the Switch, and possibly only that platform, in July. Furthermore, a new trailer for Ultimate Alliance 3 indicated that some classic Marvel hero teams like the Thunderbolts, Fantastic Four and the X-men would be offered as DLC material.
