Teen Creates App To Help Foster Kids Go To College

Joseph Franco is a graduate of Mt. Eden High School. He is one of the three finalists in the Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship. He competed against 23,000 other students. James stated that he was surprised people actually liked the app he created.

James created an app that will connect foster students to a peer network. The peer network will provide foster kids with the resources that they need to go to college.

The name of the app is F-Connect. He is working with a team that will help him launch the app. There is currently an online template available. The app will be able to help people find information about college applications, housing tools and a study buddy.

James understands the struggles of foster kids because he was one. He entered the foster system at the age of 15. He stated that he had a lot of issues with his social worker. He knows what it is like to jump from house to house and not have a family.

Studies have shown that 70 percent of kids in foster care want to go college. However, only 20 percent of them are able to go to college. Additionally, only 3 percent of foster kids will graduate from college.

Ken Berrick is the CEO of Seneca Family Agencies. He stated that foster care agencies have made great strides over the past five years. However, there is not a lot of support available for the children once they turn 18. He believes that this app will greatly benefit foster kids.

Kevin Clark is a former kid. He stated that it is important for foster kids to be able to network and be a part of the community. James is hoping that the app will be available in the app stores in four months.
