The Volusia County Police Department recently made its first arrest from information that was given through the Fortify app. Investigators stated that a student at Pine Ridge High School had threatened to bring a gun to school. He said that he was going to get this dad’s gun and shoot three people.
Another student stated that they had felt threatened and used the app to submit the information. One hour later, the police officers showed up at the student’s door. The 17-year-old had heard the student making a threat. He was afraid of what could potentially happen, so he told his mother. His mother told him to download the Fortify app.
The boy’s mom told him that he could submit all of the information that he needed via the Fortify the app. He stated that he did everything that he could because he has friends who have lost their lives because of school shootings. He wanted to prevent that from happening. He also said that school shootings are nothing to joke about.
According to clickorlando.com, the investigators were able to respond to the threat in just 15 minutes. The 16-year-old who made the threat acknowledged that he said what he was going to do. However, he stated that he was joking and never intended to carry out the threat. He was still arrested.
Captain Brian Henderson was one of the officers who responded to the call. He stated that there were no guns in the house, but the threat alone was enough to make a lot of people scared. He also stated that many parents are afraid to send their children to school because of threats like that.
The app was funded and designed by the state of Florida. It was developed after the deadly Parkland Schooting in February 2018. Seventeen people died in this shooting.
