New App Provides People With Quicker Emergency Response Times

Seconds count when emergencies happen. There is a new app that will make it easier for first responders to get to the scene. Azimuth1 teamed up with the Department of Homeland Security Science and Technology to create the app. The name of the app is Quickroute. It will let the user know if there are any conditions that can delay response time.

Quickroute will also let first responders know about the hazards that they may see along the route. Kimberli Jones-Holt is the manager of the Science and Technology program. She stated that if firemen are driving a truck with a hook and ladder, then they may not be able to drive on a narrow road. The app will give them an alternative route.

The app takes the type of emergency vehicle into consideration when it gives out instructions. It also considers whether there are tunnels and bridges are in the area. Additionally, the app considers the rules in the area, transit schedule and weather patterns.

Quickroute will be available in an app and a desktop. It is currently being tested. They are hoping that the app will be available during the second quarter of 2020. Justin Green is the Battalion Chief for the Special Operations with Loudon County Fire and Rescue, which is in Virginia. He stated that an app like this is needed.

Justin said that it may seem simple to get from point A to Point B. However, there are many factors that can affect the route. This includes things such as accidents, traffic conditions and the weather.

Chief Alan Butsch works for the Maryland County Fire and Rescue. He stated that getting to the location as quickly as possible is better for everyone. He also said that the app will make things safer for people who are sitting in traffic.
