The GPU Shortage Might Be Over, but It’s Too Early to Celebrate

After months of scalping and shortages wreaked havoc on GPU prices, things may finally be normalizing. Some GPUs have even dropped below their MSRP in some countries.

It’s possible to purchase the AMD 6500 XT at below MSRP price in some countries now, but what about GPUs that are actually in high demand? We see the price of those graphics cards dropping too but no where near as much as the 6500 XT.

Mindfactory, a German retailer, is offering the AMD card for only around $185 dollars. That’s an incredibly cheap 35% below Europe’s MSRP. A price drop in the 6500 XT isn’t cause to celebrate though. On paper, the 6500 XT is a terrible product. It lacks video encoding capabilities, and it is nearly outperformed by its previous generation counterpart, the 5500 XT. In fact, many ridiculed AMD for releasing such an underpowered card.

The 6500 XT isn’t the only graphics card to drop in price as of recent though. While still inflated about their MSRP prices, many Nvidia GPUs are dropped too. For the first time since release, the RTX 3060 can be had for under $600 on select models, and the RTX 3050 is below $400 for the first time. Even high-end GPUs, like the RTX 3080 TI, are selling for cheaper than they were just a few months ago.

The best deal to be had right now is likely AMD’s 6900 XT. Their flagship card is only running at about 30% above MSRP as of right now. Trading blows with the RTX 3080 TI, the 6900 XT is a highly sought-after card. It has the performance needed for both gaming and video rendering, and it shouldn’t be neglected simply because it lacks the Nvidia name.

Hold off on Upgrading for Future Deals

One thing is for certain, the GPU prices are still not where they need to be. The prices have dropped, but with the exception of the 6500 XT, none of the cards are even close to their recommended price tag. It may be worth waiting a few months to see what prices do. It’s expected that the second half of 2022 will see a further drop in pricing.
