According to a non-profit report, Twitter has lost 50% of its largest advertisers. Yet, Elon Musk asked Apple, who has almost completely stopped advertising on Twitter, if free speech still exists in America.
Advertisers Who Have Left Twitter
Brands that have already left Twitter since Musk took over have spent over $2 billion since 2020 and over $750 million in 2022. Chevrolet, Chipotle, Ford and Jeep have publicly stated that they will no longer advertise on Twitter. Still, most of the advertisers who have left did so without making a public statement.
Musk Tweets About Apple
Musk’s tweet comes amid Apple’s announcement that they may no longer offer the social media platform in their app store. He also pointed out that Apple, the largest company in America, puts a 30% markup on everything they sell through their platform. Musk wanted to know if the company, valued at approximately $2.08 trillion, was ready to lose that revenue stream. Omnicon, which represents many recognizable brands, including General Mills and McDonald’s, has recommended that their clients not spend any more money on Twitter.
Elon Musk Says He May Offer a New Phone
Elon does not seem worried about Apple’s threats. He says that if the company carries through with its threat, he will offer the public a new phone. He also announced that he would soon release news about efforts formerly taken by Twitter to block or hide comments that did not agree with the Vanguard’s philosophy. He has put out many tweets as advertisers pull away from Twitter.
Stay tuned as the battle heats up between Elon Musk and Apple. The twists and turns in this story over the next few days may make it interesting to follow as Musk openly confronts proponents on the other side of the political aisle from himself.
