When DOJ prosecutors said they wanted the judge to sentence Roger Stone to 7-9 years, President Trump lost his cool. Mr. Trump let the country know that sentence was too harsh for the crimes Roger committed. Mr. Stone is a loyal Trump fanboy and one of the president’s favorite conspiracy theorists.
Stone played an undercover role in Trump’s 2016 campaign. According to the Mueller report, Mr. Stone had contact with WikiLeaks during the campaign, and he let Mr. Trump know when Russian hackers would release Clinton’s hacked emails. Plus, Roger lied to Congress, and he threatened witnesses.
In a move than most legal experts claim is a first, Mr. Barr pulled rank on the prosecutors in the Stone case. Barr said the prosecutors asked for too much jail time. That announcement came after Trump’s tweet about Stone’s proposed sentence. Mr. Barr said the prosecution will let Judge Berman decide how much jail time Stone will get. But Trump may pardon Stone, according to the New York Times.
Fed Chairman Jerome Powell told a group of bankers the coronavirus could slow down U.S. economic growth in the first quarter. Most Chinese factories didn’t return to work after the Chinese New Year. And all the flight cancellations will have an impact on global tourism. Chinese officials claim GDP growth in the first quarter will drop by at least 2.0%. Mr. Powell doesn’t think U.S. GDP growth will drop that much. But according to Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin, the Boeing debacle will shave ½% off GDP growth this year.
Mr. Mnuchin still uses the president’s 3.0% growth figure to describe 2020 growth, but the economy only grew by 2.3% in 2019. And Powell said the economy will only grow by 1.8 to 2.0% in 2020. But that projection was pre-coronavirus news. Now that the virus spread to other countries, American Airlines, as well as other carriers, won’t resume service to China until late April.
The World Health Organization gave the coronavirus a formal name after discovering the virus belongs to the SARS virus species. It’s not the same virus as SARS, but it is a member of the same family. The Who named the virus COVID-19.
President Trump told the press the virus will disappear when the weather gets warmer. With more than 43,000 cases of the virus in play, the death toll could reach epic numbers. And the global economic damage could throw some countries into recession mode in 2020, according to MarketWatch.
