Huawei: what its role in the UK 5G network

Huawei is among the world’s largest telecommunication equipment providers, which began operation in 1987. The company has at least 18% of the smartphone market share making it the second-biggest smartphone maker and supplier in the world. The tensions between China and the United States have Huawei at the center. Many people are wondering whether they can be able to trust Huawei and if their data is safe with the Chinese tech giant. The United States accused China of using Huawei technology for spying through its 5G network.

The US Government has banned all US Firms from doing any form of business with Huawei and has also asked its allies to follow suit and restrain from their 5G network. Some countries like New Zealand and Australia have joined. The UK has always been a close ally of the USA. The UK decided to allow Huawei to set up its 5G networks. The 5G will help boost productivity and also help in the growth of the economy. The network has been given a tough regulation measure that will not interfere with national security. The UK has assured the public that the firm will be blocked from the highly sensitive area like the military sites, nuclear locations and that the market share will be controlled at 35%.

The US is not happy with the UK decision. The United Kingdom’s decision to use Huawei facilities may cause great US and UK trade tensions. The Trump administration had warned against such a decision since it could have brought risk to the security co-operation between the two allies. The US secretary of state Mr. Pompeo in a statement told the reporters that the US wanted to work with the UK. He argued that the UK should reconsider its decision of allowing Huawei to roll in the 5G network. This is because the US wants to be sure its allies had well-trusted network information.

According to The Guardian, the majority of US Congress leaders have called out for the UK to reconsider its decision as it might be an obstacle to the post- Bruit trade as tension rises over the security agreement between the two Allies. Some fear that the decision has given Beijing high political leverage and economic power. The UK has set up a monitoring center, the Huawei Security Evaluation Center. The center is under the National Cyber Security Centre. The UK has agreed to manage risk and will enlist new 5G suppliers to avoid over-dependence on one company.
