Academy of Art University Alumni See Wave of Oscar Nominations

For those in any way interested in or engaged with the creative arts, the Oscars are a yearly highlight. The 1st Academy Awards ceremony recognized the best films of 1927 and 1928, and took place on May 16, 1929 at a private dinner held at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel in Los Angeles, California. Academy of Awards President Douglas Fairbanks was the host.

The 91st Academy Awards ceremony, presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), will honor the best films of 2018 and will take place at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California. The ceremony will be held on February 24, 2019. Nominated Films with Academy of Art University Alumni Talent

In 2018, over 113 Academy of Art University alumni contributed to 12 films. The particulars of each film and nomination, as well as some of their alumni, are listed below.

  • The Black Panther, from Marvel Studios, Disney Studios. It has been nominated for Best Picture, Costume Design, Music (Original Score), Production Design, Sound Editing, and Sound Mixing.

  • Incredibles 2, from Disney-Pixar Studios. It has been nominated for Best Animated Feature Film.

  • The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, from Crafty Apes VFX and Netflix, is nominated for Best Costume Design and Best Writing (Adapted Screenplay).

ARTU alumnus Xinyue Cui was the Digital Compositor for this film.

  • First Man, from Universal Pictures is nominated for Production Design, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing, and Visual Effects.

ARTU alumni Richard Pang and Dan Kunz contributed to this film.

  • Bao, is an eight-minute short film from Pixar Animation Studios, and is nominated for Best Animated Short Film.

  • One Small Step, an eight-minute short from TAIKO Studios, is nominated for Best Animated Short Film.
