Sony’s PlayStation 5 release date still at least a year away

Gaming enthusiasts are looking forward to the release of the successor for the Sony PlayStation 4. Unfortunately, the wait will be at least into sometime in 2020, according to Sony’s latest information. That said, they’ll look to continue their trend of dominating the video game console marketplace.

A report via BGR.com, suggests that Sony told reporters this past week that the new PlayStation 5 models won’t see release within the next 12 months. So that could mean a release date sometime in May 2020, a month in which it could be rare to see a new video game console released. For comparison’s sake, they released the Sony PlayStation 4 models back in November of 2013.

That means a bit of a wait, but it could be well worth it. Some of the early rumors or reported details include SSD storage, an eight-core CPU, 3D audio, custom AMD Radeon Navi GPU, and 8k resolution graphics support. In addition to all that, it’s expected the PlayStation 5 will be “backward-compatible” and allow for PS4 game support.

Sony also revealed just how popular their current console is. The company reported that 96.8 million PlayStation 4 units have sold since the November 2013 launch. That made it more popular than Microsoft’s Xbox console. Sony also revealed that PS Now, the online membership service, has seen 40 percent annual growth since launch. The company mentioned there are 700,000 users and counting.

Sony’s PlayStation 4 currently sells for anywhere from over $250 to $500, depending on the console package one buys. Gamers can opt for a PS4 with just 500GB storage or 1TB models to allow for storage of more games, media, and related content.

So gaming fans will wait for further news of the actual PlayStation 5 release date, price, and other details. It also appears two of the top overall game console companies will square off again once the PS5 arrives. Microsoft’s next console called “Anaconda” is also on the way.
