Cray Technologies Acquired by HP

One of the most successful computer manufacturers in America HP announced on Friday that it would be acquiring a tech company known as Cray Technologies. This is a company that has been dealing with supercomputers since its inception. This is a tiny financial transaction that will be crucial in quickening the race towards supercomputers between China and the United States. Cray technologies is regarded as a small company that has successfully designed powerful systems in America. It’s also in the process of developing other systems that will be used in different national laboratories in America. According to Engadget, the transaction is said to have cost HP around 1.4 billion dollars. Intelligence agencies around the world as well as military installations have struggled to develop supercomputers in their effort to crack codes that will be crucial in developing nuclear weapons. However, supercomputers have also gained popularity in the civilian world as they can be used in the vehicle industry to design crashes on auto designs as well as in the healthcare industry in creating new drugs. The weather sector has a huge appetite for supercomputers as they are very helpful in predicting weather. Cray has been operating in Seattle for many years but it’s initially thought to have originated from Minnesota.

A computer designer known as Seymour Cray in the year 1972 established a company that was acquired by Silicon Graphics in 1996 before being sold to Tera Computers in 2000. This was the year that the company finally decided to use the name Cray Technologies. My. Cray didn’t see his company grow as he was involved in a car crash in 1996 and lost his life. At the moment Cray technologies has managed to employ around 1,300 employees. Most of its products are still produced in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin and supplied to other areas in America. The federal government of the United States insists that building hardware that is considered sensitive domestically is very crucial if the country is to beat competition and spying that has been witnessed recently. Customers in America have expressed concerns about security threats that they are facing by purchasing products that are produced abroad. The United States has shown its intention in dealing with this issue by banning products that are manufactured by Huawei. American Chip makers have also been prohibited by the Trump administration from doing any business with the Chinese company or its affiliates.
